18 qualify for finals in Gawai contests

MIRI: Eighteen maidens and men out of 80 have qualified for the final of the Miri Divisional-level Kumang/Keligit and Keling/Belawan Gawai 2016 to be held on May 15.

They were selected among 24 semi finalists for the four categories of the annual Gawai beauty pageant to celebrate this year’s Gawai which falls on June 1.

The finalists for the Kumang Bidayuh are Sylvincia Peyei, Georgina Bisok, Phyllis Yeoh Bee Ling, Rebecca Sellies Frederick, Audry Desmond Daie and Vanessa Gilbert Empenit.

The Kumang Iban finalists are Ivy Chang May Lan, Rhojennes Fridy, Dephnie Mat, Suzie Linda Sagai, Kathy Ngemuas and Debbie Kenstern Utang.

In the Keligit Orang Ulu, the finalists are Grace Gukang, Erica Jency Dan, Wilgrace Ubarr Wilson, Milcah Mutang, Brenda Lim Anthony and Dian Peisesha Sandy.

As for the Keling/Belawan category the finalists are Ating Mugang, Leslisuriendi Lasah, Gharance Gandai, Jaybaddhron Dan, Robert Lian and Ronnie Lian.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, meanwhile, commended the organiser for making the Gawai beauty contest as the highlight of the annual celebration.

“Through this beauty contest, the contestants will be able to build their self confidence and make them more marketable in the job market. The competition too serves as an ideal platform to enhance friendship and unite the Dayak communities in Miri,” he said.

The final of the competition will be the highlight of the dinner at Meritz Hotel on May 15, starting at 7pm.

The winner for the Kumang/Keligit categories will each receive RM1,000 in addition to trophy, sash, bouquet, hamper and certificates of participation.

Second and third place winners will receive RM800 and RM600 respectively apart from trophy, sash, bouquet, hamper and certificates of participation.

Three other finalists in each category including the Keling/Belawan category will each receive consolation prizes of RM300, certificate and hamper.

The winner in Keling/Belawan category will receive RM800 as well as trophy, scarf, hamper and certificate, while the second and third place winners will receive RM700 and RM600 respectively in addition to trophy, scarf, hamper and certificate.

Other programmes for the dinner include cultural performances by the Bidayuhs, Ibans and Orang Ulus.

This year’s celebration is hosted by the Persatuan Kebangsaan Kenyah Sarawak (PKKS) while the organising chairman is Dominic Lusat Sagan the association’s president.
