Teras members in Sibu to follow ex-leaders, says Bawang Assan chief

SIBU: Members of Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) here will follow the direction of their former leaders who are now elected state representatives.

The party’s Bawang Assan branch chairman Councillor James Laju Ambok said they would have former president Tan Sri William Mawan, Rosey Yunus and Paulus Palu Gumbang – the respective assemblyperson for Pakan, Bekenu and Batu Danau – lead the way for now on.

“Teras members in Sibu, namely those in namely Bawang Assan, Bukit Assek, Dudong, Nangka and Pelawan, have agreed to follow our elected representatives wherever they go, and to which BN (Barisan Nasional) component party that they decide to join in.

“If they’re joining PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu), then we would also join PBB en bloc,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.

James said Teras members have also agreed that they would not go back to Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).

“As SPDP is (a component party of) BN, we are not going to say any bad thing about it; it is just that we are not going back to the old party,” he pointed out.

Nevertheless, James said the Chinese members in Teras might find it difficult to follow the former leaders in joining PBB or Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).

“They (Chinese Teras members) can’t really fit in, so they need to find ways through other parties,” he said.

According to James, there are about 20,000 Teras members in Sarawak — 30 per cent of whom are Chinese.

On the recent announcement by acting president Datuk Peter Nansian with regard to the dissolution of Teras, James refused to give details other than it was ‘more or less confirmed’.

However, he stressed that proper procedures needed to be taken.

“I think some lawyers are sitting down and putting their heads together to see what the next course of action would be,” he said.
