Poor response from house owners to MCC’s refuse bins subsidy

MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) has received very poor response from house owners to its offer of subsidised price for the 120 litre two-wheeled refuse bins.

Mayor Lawrence Lai said that the council had todate only received 5,000 applications for the refuse bins from the 50,000 houses entitled for the bin subsidy.

“This bin subsidy offer is only valid until end of May this year. Thus, those rate payers who are eligible for the subsidy and yet to make their applications should grab the offer which expires in two weeks time,” he said to the media when met during MCC’s Meet The People Session at Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) Miri yesterday.

Lai explained that the subsidy of household bin was the MCC’s incentive to the rate payers in the city for their continuous commitments and cooperation for paying their assessment rates accordingly.

He said the project under the MCC’s city services permanent standing committee was aimed to ease the people’s economic burden.

“It would cost the people more than RM200 at market price for the household bin.

“With this programme, the people only have to pay RM50 to the council in order to get 120 litre two-wheeled bin each for residential use.”

However, he said applicants have to meet certain terms and conditions to enjoy the subsidy benefit.

These included only one bin per residential house, no outstanding on assessment rates and the payment of assessment rate bills must be up-to-date including payment for first half and second half of 2016 before or on May 31st this year.

On the distribution of the bins, he said the council has appointed a contractor to deliver the bin to the recipient’s house free of charge. Owners may also collect the bins themselves at the council’s office.

On the reduction of residential assessment rates effective January 1st this year, he said those who had already paid their assessment rates could claim the excess payments or allow it to be credited to the next assessment bill.
