Forestry Dept confiscates 6,273 logs

SIBU: A total of 6,273 logs estimated at 4,259 cubic metres were confiscated so far this year up to May 11.

State forestry director Sapuan Ahmad said they seized 317 short logs of 15.53 cubic metres.

The Forestry Department also seized machinery comprising a vessel with crane, eight lorries and four tractors/excavators.

“Thirty-six investigation papers had been opened and completed up to May 11, 2016,” Sapuan told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.

He noted that 51 suspects had their statements recorded.

In the fight against illegal logging, the department utilised unmanned drones to keep a hawk’s eye on illegal logging since beginning of this year.

After officiating at a briefing for sawmill operators here in February this year, Sapuan said to deal with illegal logging the department was equipped with 29 vehicles, four caravans and 50 guns.

He warned of stern action against those found in possession of illegal logs or timber.

According to Sapuan, mill operators were responsible for ensuring that all logs/timber in their mills were legally sourced.
