Five design exhibitions to catch this summer

Twitchell via AFPPARIS, June 25 — With the Milan Furniture Fair all wrapped up and the next Maison & Objet interior design show a few months away, here’s a look at some of the best design exhibitions around the world to keep fans of the discipline entertained this summer.

“Radical Design” until November 17, 2017, at Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein, Germany

The museum of the furniture maker Vitra is holding an exhibition dedicated to the Italian “Radical Design” movement. Reaching its height at the end of the 1960s as a protest against the popular functionalist design trends of the day, the movement’s most famous designs include the distinctive “La Mamma” lounge chair by Gaetano Pesce.

“Nendo: The Space in Between” until October 30, 2016, at Design Museum Holon, Israel

The Israeli museum is holding a retrospective of work from the world-renowned design studio Nendo, founded by Japanese designer Oki Sato. The show looks back over his career through 74 works.

“S.O.S. Sottsass Olivetti Synthesis” until August 21, 2016, at the Olivetti showroom in Venice, Italy

Designer Ettore Sottsass is usually associated with the Memphis Group, known for its use of bright colours and extravagant shapes. His work for Olivetti, the famous Italian typewriter maker, is often overlooked. Ahead of the centenary of Ettore Sottsass’s birth in 2017, the firm is paying homage to the designer with an exhibition showcasing the office furniture system he designed for the brand.

“Atmosphere for Enjoyment: Harry Bertoia’s Environment for Sound” and “Bent, Cast & Forged: The Jewellery of Harry Bertoia” until September 25 at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, USA

Known to design buffs as the creator of the famous “Diamond” chair, produced by Knoll, Harry Bertoia also worked on jewellery designs, as well as sculptures exploring the properties of sound. Such works are on show this summer at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, USA.

The Danish museum is celebrating its 125th birthday with an homage to Japanese design, which strongly inspired Danish design. Works originating from both countries will be on show at the museum to highlight these inspirations.
