Minister of Transport, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, said the MOU was expected to further strengthen trade activities between the two countries.

“The MOU is important to support China’s 21st Century Maritime Silk Road initiative to expand trade in the region.

“Malaysia has many ports such as the Port of Kuching, Sepanggar and many more in both states where we can form alliances with the ports in China,” he said.

Liow said this at a media briefing in conjunction with the 9th World Huizhou Convention here today.

Earlier, Liow witnessed the signing of the MOU between the Kelantan Port Authority, which was represented by its Chairman, Tan Sri Tengku Azlan Abu Bakar, and the Port of Huizhou, by its Director-General, Ma Chenghui.

Also present were Chairman of Huizhou Malaysia, Datuk Seri Lee Jin Xian and President of Huizhou China, Chen Xun Ting.

Liow said the MOU was also part of the government’s effort to increase the value of trade with China which was targeted to reach US$160 billion (US$1 = RM4.08) by 2017.

“In 2014, trade with China was US$100 billion and we will work to increase it to US$160 billion by 2017. The target is a big high and difficult to achieve.

“However, we will work to increase it and if we fail to achieve it next year, we will continue the following year,” he said.
