Under fire, USM points out not involved in I-Mizu business strategy
KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — After receiving flak for promoting I-Mizu, a filtration system that supposedly produces water that can treat major illnesses, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) explained today that it does not have any direct involvement in the firm’s business strategy.
The university wrote on its Facebook page that its collaboration with I-Mizu was merely to foster competition among local industries, especially in studies on hydrochemical innovations, to ensure full optimisation of local resources.
“An effort like this is in line with the university’s role in sharing expertise and manpower to strengthen the position of the industry and local entrepreneurs,” USM said.
“USM is not involved in the business strategies of firms and in any industry that it collaborates with, including at the international level,” it added.
The university also said it has taken appropriate action by advising all parties concerned to make sure all claims are authenticated and not made arbitrarily.
It is not immediately clear, however, if USM was referring specifically to I-Mizu when it said action has been taken.
On Thursday, the university and Miresco Integrated Sdn Bhd signed an official agreement to “ensure high-quality drinking water” through the promotion of I-Mizu water in a glitzy event at the Royale Chulan hotel.
Also present at the event was songstress Datuk Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin, who the university said has agreed to assist in promoting the I-Mizu water.
What drew the ire of some Facebook users was the promotional poster bearing USM’s insignia that was put up at the event, and which was also uploaded on USM’s Facebook page.
According to the poster, I-Mizu claims to have successfully treated 150 types of ailments and health problems such as cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, tumours, cholesterol, eczema and obesity.
Facebook users rained criticism on the university, some sarcastically saying that with the miracle water, no one would need treatment at hospitals any longer.
According to I-Mizu’s official website, the product is an “excellent” filter system which converts regular tap water into hydrogen-rich alkaline water.
“The filter system not only alkalises, ionises and softens tap water, but also removes any residual chlorine and heavy metals out of your tap water.
“The system effectively minimises health risks from water pollution and brings micro-mineral water conveniently to your homes,” the website stated.
