Rafizi: Little room now for coup in ‘rotten’ Umno
PETALING JAYA: Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz Mahathir, expelled from Umno, should not join the movement for changes in the country’s systems, said PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli today.
He said there was now less room for an internal Umno coup against party president Najib Razak and he urged the pair to look beyond ousting Najib.
The two men have been part of a campaign led by former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad to force Najib out of office as Umno president and prime minister.
An ally, Umno vice president Shafie Apdal, was suspended yesterday.
“Any hope for Najib to be removed through other means apart from the electoral process, appears difficult as the space in Umno is being shut down,” Rafizi said in a statement.
He said Muhyiddin and Mukhriz would have “a significant impact” on the opposition’s efforts to unseat Najib at the next general election if they joined the reform movement and offered solutions to the country’s problems.
He said: “Umno is rotten and anyone who has power and money will be in power.” However, Najib might become overconfident about the people’s support after the Barisan Nasional victories in two by-elections this month.
