Muhyiddin, Mukhriz sacking apt as it involves disciplinary issues, Khaled says
JOHOR BARU, June 25 — The sacking of Umno deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and former Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir is the most apt decision and has been lauded by Johor Umno.
Johor Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this was because the duo were found to have committed disciplinary offences and had conspired with the opposition to attack the party leadership.
As such, he said Umno members at all levels should be rational and accept the decision as a test of their patience and maturity in fighting for the party’s struggle.
“I believe that the decision did not come as a shock to anyone, especially to those involved,” he told reporters after attending the ‘Ziarah Ramadan’ programme at Bandar Seri Alam, Pasir Gudang, here today.
He said Muhyiddin, who was once the chairman of Umno management committee in charge of disciplinary matters, knew for a fact one of the reasons Umno members could be sacked is when they conspire with the opposition and go publicly against the party’s candidates.
Mohamed Khaled, who is also Johor Mentri Besar, said this in response to the decision made by Umno Supreme Council yesterday to sack Muhyiddin and Mukhriz for indiscipline and to suspend vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal until the council receives a report from the party’s disciplinary committee.
Meanwhile, Barisan Nasional (BN) Back Benchers’ Council president Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad also agreed that the sacking of Muhyiddin and Mukhriz did not come as a shock as many had seen it coming.
He said the former Deputy Prime Minister and former Kedah Mentri Besar had a good chance to prove their loyalty to Umno and BN at the recently-concluded Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections, but had failed to make optimum use of the opportunity.
“Muhyiddin and Mukhriz could have shown their commitment to the party in the two by-elections even if they refused to show their commitment to the party leadership.
“Sadly, during the nomination day, only Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal was present,” he said.
In Balik Pulau, Balik Pulau Umno division chief Datuk Seri Hilmi Yahaya also said that the decision to sack both Muhyiddin and Mukhriz was appropriate as they had committed a breach of discipline.
He said the duo were among the individuals entrusted with the responsibility to take care and protect the party, but what they did was the opposite.
“So the decision was apt to prevent recurrence,” he told reporters after presenting Aidilfitri donations to recipients here today.
Hilmi also said the sacking of Muhyiddin and Mukhriz would not affect Umno members at the grass roots. — Bernama
