DON’T WORRY GUAN ENG : TWO-TERM LIMIT FOR PM FIRST – NOT YET FOR STATE LEADERS, SAYS MUKHRIZ
KUALA LUMPUR – Two Opposition newcomers want the prime minister’s tenure to be limited to two terms, but demurred when asked if they would push the same for state government leaders.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) protem vice-president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir said the “greater focus” should be on the prime minister.
“Our focus is on the most powerful person and that being the PM at the moment as we have not yet deliberated on state chiefs and others,” he told a joint news conference here with Parti Amanah Negara.
On the propsed limit, Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) deputy president Salahuddin Ayub suggested it be implemented through convention if they cannot amend the Federal Constitution.
Salahuddin said this was the practice in the United States and United Kingdom.
“In the UK, it is understood that the prime minister’s term is limited to two term and if we cannot change the BN-government in the next general election, we propose for this to be done this way,” he said.
Pakatan Harapan has also yet to adopt such a practice in the states that it is governing.
In the Penang state assembly earlier this year, the Speaker rejected for the third time DAP assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu’s motion to limit the tenure of the Penang chief minister to two consecutive terms.
