Gerakan forms groups to tackle local issues facing Penangites
GEORGE TOWN: Gerakan has vowed to resolve bread and butter issues involving Penangites, such as clogged drains, cleanliness and traffic issues through a special task force formed throughout the state.
State Gerakan chairman Teng Chang Yeow said it would mobilise its 48 residents’ representative committees (JPP) to gather complaints and other issues affecting the populace.
“By right, the local elected representatives and municipal councillors are supposed to do this, but they are so busy politicking.
“From what we have heard, the grievances of the people have not been attended to by the local authorities,” he said today.
Teng said the 48 JPP reps (one from each committee) are new faces and they will engage the media from time to time on local issues.
Commenting further, he hoped the JPP would help Penangites, as well as help build support towards Gerakan and BN, in a long run.
Earlier, Teng opened the 14th General Election Workshop for Wanita Barisan Nasional at the Gerakan headquarters here.To date, the JPPs have highlighted several issues. They are:
Penang Island:
- Lip Sin Garden: construction waste indiscriminately dumped behind the old Lip Sin Market.
- Rifle Range: Bird waste issue and uncollected garbage problems.
- Kedah Road: Missing drain covers; a pocket park there not maintained.
- Bandar Sri Pinang: A ditch has been spotted covered with weeds and piles of garbage.
- Taman Chor Sin Kheng: Park is abandoned, overgrown with weeds; river is blocked.
- Sungai Nibong: Bayan Baru market food court cleanliness not up to mark
Seberang Perai:
- Taman Sejahtera, Jalan Alma Jaya, Bukit Mertajam: Garbage strewn all over the road, not attended to by municipality.
Meanwhile, those with problems at their respective neighbourhoods can call Gerakan at 04-2280228.
