One Man Drank 8 Bottles of Coconut Water a Day, This is Why He Ended Up in an ER

The coconut water is abundant in potassium which is very beneficial for your health, and it can also be harmful if it’s consumed in excess. One recent study “Death by Coconut” that was conducted by Dr. Justin Hakimian and his team investigated the case of one 42-year old man suffering from abnormal heart rhythm and a frequent fainting after consuming coconut water. One day, this man was playing tennis at high temperatures, and he consumed a bottle of coconut water. Suddenly he felt lightheaded and lost consciousness. When the doctors examined him they found he had a low heart rate and a low blood pressure.one-man-drank-8-bottles-of-coconut-water-a-day-this-is-why-he-ended-up-in-an-er

The doctors concluded that this man was experiencing signs of increased potassium levels in his blood. The human’s body needs a right amount of potassium in order to everything functions properly. Most of the American population doesn’t get enough potassium as a result of the unhealthy diet which rarely includes fresh fruit and fresh vegetables. However, consuming too much potassium-rich fruit and veggies can also cause health issues. The increased potassium levels in the blood might lead to heart rhythm changes and ventricular fibrillation, and if both conditions are left untreated, they could be fatal!

This is the reason why the Institute of Medicine has set a recommended daily potassium intake that currently sits at 4 700 mg. for an adult person. The upper limit has yet to be determined, because scientists are still not sure about how much potassium we can consume. The amount of potassium in the blood could be increased because of decreased excretion and excess potassium intake.

Also, the levels of potassium might be increased as a result of:

  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Breakdown of muscle tissue (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Breakdown of the red blood cells (hemolysis)
  • Addison’s disease (adrenal failure)
  • Burns and trauma
  • Medications such as beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, and antibiotics such as penicillin
  • Kidney disease

The man that was the subject of the previously mentioned study was suffering from a muscle tissue breakdown which happens as a result of strenuous exercise, muscle exertion and exercising in hot conditions. This condition might cause kidney damage, and as said by the doctors, this man consumed 5500 mg. of potassium through the coconut water which led to his hospitalization.

Fortunately, with a pacemaker this man was able to recover– his heart function was normalized as well as his potassium levels and his kidneys and muscles have regained normal function. The dangers of the high potassium levels as a result of the coconut water have been a subject of many other studies as well.

People suffering from heart problems and kidney disease have to avoid drinking coconut water especially after some hard workouts, when the body loses many electrolytes. Coconut water does not contain enough electrolytes and cannot properly hydrate the body in these conditions.

However, this doesn’t mean that coconut water is not beneficial for some people. This amazing natural drink is hydrating your body, provides your body with essential nutrients and quenches your thirst. Limit your daily intake to a couple of servings and enjoy the coconut water’s full health benefits!
