DAP BACK TO ITS BAD WAYS: SABAH OPPOSITION CRIES FOUL AS DAP STAKES CLAIM ON SELECTED SEATS BEFORE FORMAL NEGO BEGINS
KOTA KINABALU – A move by DAP to lay claim to certain seats in the upcoming general election is not going down well with fellow Opposition parties here.
Sabah DAP secretary Chan Foong Hin’s assertion that the party wanted to field candidates in the Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Putatan and Sepanggar parliamentary as well as the Darau and Tanjung Aru state seats has raised eyebrows among the Opposition’s ranks.
Sabah DAP had also said it wanted to contest the Pensiangan and Keningau parliamentary seats as well as the Tulid and Sook state seats.
Opposition leaders like Warisan Youth chief Mohd Azis Jamman said they were caught by surprise over DAP’s claim as negotiations on seats had not even started.
The Penampang parliamentary is held by Warisan deputy president Darrel Leiking who won on a PKR ticket in the last general election.
Azis noted that Sabah DAP leaders, including its chief Stephen Wong, had said they were keen to work on an electoral pact with Warisan.
He said while it was crucial for opposition parties to avoid multi-cornered fights, there were also other pressing matters to tackle for now.
These included highlighting issues such as the goods and services tax, Sabah’s state rights as well as petroleum royalties, he added.
Azis said the time would come for the opposition leaders to work out the seat allocation.
DAP now holds the Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan parliamentary seats.
