WHAT THE HELL IS NRD TRYING TO DO? ARE THEY TRYING TO PLAY POLITICS LIKE IGP? CHILD ACTIVISTS FUME AT APPEAL AGAINST ‘BIN ABDULLAH’ RULING

KUALA LUMPUR – Child rights activists have questioned the National Registration Department’s swift move to file an appeal to the Federal Court against the ruling that a child born out of wedlock has the right to carry the father’s name.

NRD’s decision was announced on Friday after the Court of Appeal made the ruling.

“Malaysia is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, therefore, the (NRD) has to take on the child’s interest. I don’t understand why the need (for an appeal to the Federal Court),” former Suhakam commissioner James Nayagam told theSun today.

The Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) had welcomed the ruling made on Thursday, saying that “all children must be treated equally and protected from discrimination, regardless of their parents’ maritul status”.

“The ruling is also consistent with international child rights standards. According to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, governments must ‘respect the right of the child to preserve his or her identity, including … name and family relations’,” WAO communications officer Tan Heang-Lee said.

On Friday, the NRD had reportedly filed an appeal to the Federal Court after the ruling was made.

When contacted, NRD said the appeal date is not known yet.
