I can do wonders in Kedah if Anwar is PM, says Johari Abdul
Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul has not given up on his plan to vacate his seat for PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to return to Parliament - and his intention for wanting to do so has become clearer now.
It appears that Johari, who is also the assemblyperson for Gurun, has not given up on his desire to head the Kedah state governemnt as its menteri besar.
Met at the Penang PKR's #reformasi20tahun event in Bayan Baru on the island, Johari said he was ready to quit his seat when Anwar is ready to contest, and added, "Let's wait until the party polls are over."
Johari said the move could pave the way for him to head the state of Kedah, with Anwar as the eighth prime minister.
"I'm proud to do so because if Anwar becomes Sungai Petani MP and I the Gurun assemblyperson, just imagine what will happen to Kedah?" Johari shot back when asked why would he sacrifice his seat for his party boss.
Asked if his plan to vacate his seat was to pave the way for him to become Kedah's top leader (as the menteri besar), he said "yes".
He added: "Yes, because Kedah is now in a mess (tercorot-corot), it's at the bottom after Kelantan. I have ideas on how to develop my state, I want to focus on it.
"That is why I want Anwar to come to Sungai Petani, to become a prime minister from Kedah. Just imagine what I can do when this happens, I can do wonders.
"And I have the ideas on how to do this. With strong and united support from the PM, I'm sure I can do it."
Reminded that the current Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad also hails from Kedah and his son Mukhriz Mahathir is the current menteri besar, Johari was quick to decline comment.
"I don't want to comment about other people's party. I'm talking about our party. PKR is our party," said Johari, who chairs the Backbenchers Council in Parliament.
Asked which position he preferred - to be a federal minister or menteri besar, Johari said he would choose the MB post.
"I would rather be the menteri besar because Kedah has everything, all the ingredients for development. But unfortunately, we do not focus on them and we lose the chance to develop our resources," Johari lamented.
"Compared to Penang, which has only 10 percent of what Kedah has, we are not in full gear.
"So I really hope Anwar will contest in Sungai Petani and let me focus on Gurun," added the PKR vice-president candidate.
As to whether he would consider a state executive council (state cabinet) post, Johari quipped, "Let the juniors have that post, lah."
Early this month, Johari said he was willing to offer Anwar his seat because "he is like a brother to me, I love him very much".
At the time, Anwar won the PKR presidency without contest, replacing his wife and Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who held the post since 1999, when PKR was formed.
Upon his release from prison after having received a total pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Anwar is planning to return to Parliament before he succeeds Mahathir as the country's eighth prime minister.
The move was based on an agreement between Anwar and Mahathir join forces to topple BN and Najib Abdul Razak prior to the 14th general election. - Mkini
