Unacceptable, ridiculous to discontinue BR1M, says MP

An MP from PKR has lashed out at Economics Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali for suggesting that the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) initiated under the previous BN regime be discontinued.
Outspoken Kapar MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid reminded Azmin and all those who agree with the discontinuance of BR1M that the aid is a pledge under Pakatan Harapan's GE14 manifesto.
"Now that we have been given the mandate to run the country, we have to fulfil our promises to the people.
"In our manifesto, we have agreed to continue paying the BR1M to the people (those who qualify) to help them cope with the rising cost of living," Abdullah said when met on the sidelines of PKR's #reformasi20tahun event in conjunction with the party's leqadership elections this year.
Abdullah courted controversy when he alleged that Azmin was hatching a plot, with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his close ally, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, to prevent PKR president Anwar Ibrahim from becoming the next PM.
hatching a plot
Abdullah, who is aligned to former Pandan MP and PKR deputy president candidate Rafizi Ramli has since apologised to Mahathir on Aug 21, after he spoke to Anwar for about 40 minutes.
Met in Penang today, Abdullah was asked to respond to Azmin's statement that BR1M would be discontinued as there were elements of corruption practised by the previous government (BN) to obtain the support of the people.
A new Harapan initiative
The Harapan administration was in the midst of drafting a new initiative that would focus on the welfare of the people, instead of "bribing or deceiving them", Azmin added.
Azmin's remarks followed that of his boss, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who said his administration aimed to reduce BR1M in stages before it is fully discontinued.
Abdullah attended the event with Rafizi, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution, and MPs Nurul Izzah Anwar (Permatang Pauh) and William Leong (Selayang).
He said if the management of BR1M has a problem, such as corruption, the Harapan government could easily resolve the matter as it is currently the ruling party.
If the federal government is administered properly, without "thieves or robbers", there would not be any problem channeling the money to the people, he said.
"However, if we insist on discontinuing the BR1M, we have to consider how to address the rising cost of living. It can only be discontinued when we manage to bring prices (of goods) and petroleum down, when salaries have gone up, then only there would be some form of balance.
"Otherwise, where is the check and balance? I do not see BR1M as an issue," Abdullah added.
"The issue before us today is that we must not have cronies, or practise corruption, misappropriation of funds or robbery. These are the government's total responsibilities."
Abdullah said the government must focus on ensuring the administration is free from corruption as this is part of the reform agenda.
"So, why withdraw something that benefits the people? Some of the excuses given, such as not wanting to make people lazy, are unacceptable. We have to find a good reason to discontinue the existing aid."
Abdullah insisted on fighting the proposal to disband BR1M, saying he would not compromise if the people were pressured and oppressed.
He refused to accept excuses to terminate the aid policy "without concrete reasons".
"I cannot accept it. It is ridiculous and I cannot compromise on a matter such as this.
"It's okay if I'm not popular, but let not the rakyat be oppressed. Let me be unpopular, but do not take away the rakyat's rights, let me be unpopular as long as the rakyat do not suffer," he said.
Asked who was he directing his comment at - the federal government or certain leaders - Abdullah replied: "At whoever agrees that BR1M be discontinued.
"Honestly speaking, no matter who they are, I do not agree that they withdraw this benefit from the people." -Mkini
