In China, Kit Siang says DAP invited by Beijing to improve ties
The veteran politician joins several other DAP elected representatives to speak to Malaysian diaspora in China.
PETALING JAYA: DAP’s Lim Kit Siang said the party had been given a role to play in strengthening ties between China and Malaysia under Pakatan Harapan, the veteran politician told a gathering of Malaysian diaspora in Shanghai today.
“The Chinese government has invited DAP to visit Shanghai and Peking (Beijing) to help further strengthen the relationship of both countries,” he was quoted as saying by the Shanghai chapter of electoral reforms coalition Bersih Shanghai, which organised a forum today called “Malaysian Diaspora and New Malaysia”.
His visit to China comes on the back of the much-publicised trip by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently.
Apart from Lim, who is the Iskandar Puteri MP, several other DAP elected representatives also attended the forum, including Chew Chong Sin, Fong Kui Lun, Ngeh Koo Ham, Alice Lau, Khoo Poay Tiong, Chan Foong Hin, Oscar Ling and Wong Tack.
Chew in his speech urged the PH government to form a special panel to woo those living in China to return home and join government-linked companies (GLC) to contribute to the development of a “new Malaysia”.
“I hope the government will set up a Harapan Panel to select and help those suitable talents, and provide incentives as well as remove certain restrictions to encourage them to come back,” he said.
The three-hour forum, which discussed issues such as discriminatory policies, the UTC certification controversy and deferment of mega projects, also saw participants collecting RMB18,888 (RM11,354) for the Tabung Harapan, the fund set up by the PH government to allow the public help clear the national debt.
Chew meanwhile said both Malaysia and China were striving for a more balanced relationship following Putrajaya’s decision to put on hold infrastructure projects undertaken by Chinese companies.
“The Chinese government fully understands that these projects are not sustainable or economically viable,” he was quoted as saying by Bersih Shanghai. -FMT
