‘Satan’ remark: Cops told to probe Ramasamy
KUALA LUMPUR: Two NGOs today lodged police reports against Penang’s Deputy Chief Minister II, P Ramasamy, for equating controversial preacher Zakir Naik with Satan in a Facebook posting.
Pertubuhan Martabat Jalinan Muhibbah President Abdul Rani Kulop Abdullah, speaking to reporters outside the Sentul police station, said Ramasamy’s article had the potential to incite public anger.
“It is very rude and vulgar to regard a world renowned preacher as the devil,” he said, adding that a high-ranking political leader should not have made a statement that could cause anger among the public.
Malaysian Muslim People’s Coalition (IRIMM) President Amir Amsaa Alla Pitchay agreed, claiming that Malaysians could not tolerate such statements.
The chairman of IRIMM’s Penang chapter, Zainol Abidin Ahmad, said Ramasamy had insulted Islam. “We urge the police to act on his rude behaviour,” he said.
Earlier today, Ramasamy issued an apology over the Facebook posting, which has since been removed. He said he did not mean to hit out at Islam or Muslims.
Yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar disclosed that he had instructed Universiti Teknikal Malaysia in Malacca to cancel a talk Zakir was scheduled to deliver on April 17. The topic of the talk was to be “Similarities Between Hinduism and Islam.”
