Budiman gets cracking with early morning market visit

SUNGAI BESAR: Newly-elected as MP, Budiman Mohd Zohdi wasted no time in setting about his tasks, calling at Sekinchan market early today to give traders an assurance he would seek to improve conditions there.

He said the people’s mandate from the by-election yesterday was to struggle to uphold their rights and demands.

Budiman said the market’s dilapidated condition gave the impression that the assemblyman for Sekinchan did not care about the place (the seat is held by Ng Suee Lim, deputy secretary of Selangor DAP).

He said he was very sympathetic about the traders’ situation. The drains were poorly maintained, floors not washed, and the lighting looked gloomy despite the constituency being held by DAP for three terms.

“The market is very important to the locals, because it is also a place for the people from around Tanjong Karang to buy their daily items,” he said.

Although Sekinchan was known as a DAP stronghold, efforts to improve and refurbish the market were not bound to political affiliation, and he was doing it out of his obligations as the MP.

He promised to try for a federal allocation.

Budiman was elected yesterday with a 9.191-vote majority over his closest rival, compared to the narrow 399-vote margin in the 2013 general election.

Budiman said the swing in Chinese support was a clear message that the community wanted a moderate leader, who understood local issues in depth.

“I accept the support from them (the Chinese) with an open heart, and I will strive to give the best possible service,” he added.

Budiman obtained 16,800 votes yesterday while Parti Amanah Negara candidate Azhar Abdul Shukur obtained 7,609 and Dr Abdul Rani Osman of PAS obtained 6,902.
