Voters produce ‘beautiful numbers’ 9191, 6969
PETALING JAYA: Voters produced two “beautiful” numbers in yesterday’s by-elections which drew the attention of Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Najib Razak.
The figures were 9191, the BN winning majority in Sungai Besar, and 6969, the majority in Kuala Kangsar.
Speaking at the BN victory announcment at Sungai Besar last night, Najib remarked that the majority achieved by the BN candidate was “a truly beautiful figure, 9191″
BN candidate Budiman Mohd Zohdi polled 16,800 votes, giving him a 9,191-vote majority over his closest rival, Azhar Abdul Shukur (Amanah) with 7,609 votes. The other contender, Dr Abdul Rani Osman (PAS), polled 6,902.
Najib said: “Many didn’t expect it, some said we will (not) win because the previous majority was only 399, some said we can win by maybe 2,000 votes, maybe 3,000 but yesterday I said I want more than 5,000.
“Some say I am greedy, so victory was not possible, but thank god, our prayers were granted, god gave an extraordinary win (in Sungai Besar), beyond our expectation, majority with a truly beautiful figure, 9191,” he said.
He also recorded his appreciation to the voters in Kuala Kangsar who had returned the BN candidate by a large majority of 6,969 votes, another figure that Najib also deemed to be beautiful.
BN candidate Mastura Mohd Yazid polled 12,653 votes, for a majority of 6,969 over Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad (PAS) who received 5,684 votes. The other candidates, Prof Dr Ahmad Termizi Ramli (Amanah) polled 4,883 and Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary (independent) 54.
In the general election of 2013, Mastura’s late husband Wan Khair-il was elected by a majority of only 1,082 votes over a PAS candidate.
