KUALA KANGSAR: Mastura Mohd Yazid, newly-elected MP for Kuala Kangsar, is to consult the Perak Mufti about how to go about her duties as an elected representative while still in mourning for her husband.

Although required to observe the mourning period for four months and 10 days, Mastura said she also had to serve the people of Kuala Kangsar.

“I need to know the guideline under which to serve,” she told reporters at her residence in Bukit Chandan here today adding that she would seek the advice of the state Mufti.

She obtained a 6,969-vote majority compared to the 1,082-vote majority obtained by her late husband, Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad, at the 2013 general election. Wan Khai-il died last month in a helicopter crash in Sarawak which also killed Sungai Besar MP Noriah Kasnon.

Mastura, 55, polled 12,653 votes, while her rivals Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad (PAS) obtained 5,684 votes, and Prof Dr Ahmad Termizi Ramli (Amanah) received 4,883. Independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary received only 54 votes and lost his election deposit.

She said that among the factors contributing towards her enlarged majority was the support of the Chinese community, as well as the co-ordinated efforts of the BN machinery during the campaign.

“The bigger majority was also a manifestation of the feelings of the voters towards Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar,” she said.,” she said.

This morning, Mastura started to receive local residents seeking her services as an elected representative.

Hashim Azaldin, 70, a villager from Kampung Menora, was her first guest at 9.45am. Mastura said Hashim sought help to seek treatment for blurred vision.

Another caller was a handicapped man, Ismail Awang Besar, 52, of Kampung Sayong Lembah, who informed her that her late husband had ordered a khat Quran wooden carving from him. She recalled asking her husband to buy Quranic verses to be placed on the wall of the house.
