ALOR SETAR: The Information Department constantly enhances its role in monitoring and disseminating authentic information to avoid confusion among the general public.

Its Director-General, Datuk Ibrahim Abdul Rahman said the department always monitored issues that went viral in the social media which could affect national security and harmony.

“Lately, the public easily believes and are influenced by all information disseminated via the social website without knowing their validity nor referring to the official sources.

“We fear if the invalid information are spread, they could jeopardise national harmony and bring down the government. In addition, we also wish to educate society so that they will be more mature and do not accept anything that is being given to them easily,” he told reporters after the Information Department’s Breaking of the Fast gathering, here last night.

He added that as responsible members of the society, the public should capitalise on the social media channels such as Facebook as a medium to report on positive matters instead of abusing them for personal interest.

Earlier, Ibrahim gave away ‘baju raya’ dan ‘duit raya’ to about 60 orphans from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Simpang Kuala, Pusat Jagaan Baitul Ahmad and Rumah Anak Yatim Amal Solehah, Pendang.

In another development, Ibrahim hoped members of the public could start to plan programs that could be implemented in conjunction with the 59th National Day to be celebrated on August 30 to enliven the celebration.

“Various programs can be implemented to demonstrate patriotism in celebrating the National Day such as having processions, decorated arches and villages using the Malaysian flags either individually or in groups,” he added. – Bernama
