Police take statement from DAP’s Ting in citizenship row
PETALING JAYA: A Sarawak assemblyman from the DAP has given a statement to police after being accused of holding dual Malaysian and Australian citizenship.
Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon gave his statement in Miri today, according to Star Online which reported that Dr Ting went to the Miri police headquarters at about 2.15pm accompanied by his lawyer Alan Ling, Sarawak DAP secretary.
Dr Ting had been elected in May in a four-way contest with candidates from the Barisan Nasional (BN), PAS and an independent.
His BN rival, business tycoon Hii King Chong, filed an electoral petition in the High Court on Thursday, seeking to disqualify Dr Ting. He alleged that Dr Ting had acquired Australian citizenship before the elections and was a registered voter in Australia.
The state constitution disqualifies anyone elected to the state legislative assembly if he has acquired the citizenship of another country. Malaysian law does not provide for dual citizenship.
Dr Ting polled 8,899 votes to Hii’s 7,140, while PAS candidate Jofri Jaraiee received 513 and independent candidate Fong Pau Teck, 375.
