Meet Elena, Disney’s first Latin-inspired princess
Look out Elsa and Anna, there’s a new Disney princess in town. And she’s fast becoming a crowd favourite.
Princess Elena of Avalor made her debut at Walt Disney World Resort recently, and the royal family’s newest member will be introduced to visitors through live performances several times a day at Magic Kingdom Park.
Inspired by diverse Latin cultures, Elena of Avalor is the latest ethnic character created to appeal to kids of Hispanic backgrounds and open kids up to different cultures. She is described as an amalgam of diverse Latin and Hispanic cultures. The kingdom she rules, Avalor, incorporates Latin architecture, traditions, food and customs from around the world.
Elena’s residence at Walt Disney Resort in Florida follows on the launch of Disney’s new animated TV series Elena of Avalor which premiered on the Disney Channel and Disney Junior last month, and is ranked as the number one series telecast among kid-targeted TV networks for kids ages 2 to 11 for 2016 to date.
Each episode features original songs that incorporate an array of Latin musical styles including mariachi, Latin pop, salsa, banda and Chilean hip-hop. Elena’s princess gown was designed to reflect her origins; 14 yards of crimson “Avaloran” satin are embroidered with more than 900 flowers that represent her kingdom, while her crown is bedazzled with 222 jewels.
Following the meteoric success of Frozen, Princesses Elsa and Anna — inspired by Norwegian culture — became permanent residents at Epcot.
Disney’s next highly anticipated heroine, Moana, hails from the South Pacific.
Following her stint at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Elena will be introduced to visitors at Disneyland Resort in California this fall. — AFP Relaxnews
