Here’s an umbrella built for Malaysian storms
Can you have a passionate love affair with umbrellas?
For two Kiwis, stealing time at lunch break and spending many sleepless nights in the kitchen experimenting with prototypes has led to the creation of Blunt Umbrellas.
Founded in New Zealand in 2009 by design engineer Greig Brebner and his buddy, entrepreneur Scott Kington, Blunt umbrellas was cheekily named after the brolly’s signature rounded safety tips.
“We initially called it Pointless because unlike the sharp tips of the traditional umbrellas, ours had a softer tip. Also, we were wondering if there was a point to our years of crazy passion!” says Kington during a recent interview.
The duo learnt that the product they had revolutionised was not welcomed in the industry that thrives on throwaway high volume cheaper products. Undeterred, they continued to better their brolly and today, can lay claim to designing the world’s strongest umbrella.
A major flaw of conventional umbrella design is that in even light winds, the fabric can tear away from a tip or come away from the ribs. When this happens, the whole structure collapses and the umbrella heads straight to the landfill.
Blunt’s design has won many prestigious awards for its revolutionary canopies and radial tensioning system, which ensure the umbrella can withstand wind strength up to 50mph. It provides maximum control, even in volatile weather conditions.
In addition, each umbrella comes equipped with an approved 38-point quality control check, fibreglass ribs, aerodynamic handling, wind tunnel testing, safety tips, storm resistance and a two-year global warranty.
“We have models that offer 99.9% UV protection but every model has been tested to have a four degree Celsius lower temperature below the umbrella compared to the one degree less in ordinary umbrellas,” says Kington.
Come rain, sun or even typhoon, these umbrellas can be popped out easily. There are numerous models, handles and funky colours to choose from. For kids, there are also colour changing ink models. When it rains, the picture on the umbrella transforms to a different cartoon.
A great stylish accessory for city dwellers and travellers, it folds and fits snugly into the included umbrella compact, saving precious space in your bag and making it easier to port around town.
Blunt Umbrellas are priced five times higher (starts at RM270) than the normal brolly but they can be replaced if the edges break during the warranty period.
“We are all about beating the umbrella throwaway culture and our goal is to replace every bad umbrella with a Blunt model,” says Brebner.
Blunt Umbrellas will be available at selected retail stores soon but consumers can now order it online at http://ift.tt/2b4FWGF.
