New ditty flooding Internet is amusing and annoying

piko-taro

PETALING JAYA: Just what makes a bespectacled 44-year-old male, sport a pencil moustache and animal-print attire, and sing a mindless song called the Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen?

Leaving most stumped, many amused and others annoyed to the max, the Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen song by DJ Piko-Taro, a fictional character cooked-up by Japanese entertainer Kazuhiko Kosaka, has nevertheless stormed the Internet just days after being uploaded.

Lasting under one minute (thank goodness!), Piko-Taro sings his song to a rather catchy techno soundtrack and throws in some simple yet funky dance moves to keep viewers glued to his antics.

The lyrics, inane as it is, are rather simple – something a kindergarten student could pick-up in minutes:

“I have a pen. I have an apple. Huh! Apple-pen!
I have a pen. I have [a] pineapple. Huh! Pineapple-pen!
Apple-pen. Pineapple-pen. Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen.”

Touted as the next big Internet sensation after Psy’s Gangnam Style and the Harlem Shake, the Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen song has spawned reactions aplenty by netizens who gamely imitate his style as they lip-sync to the lyrics and are not embarrassed to post their videos on YouTube for all of cyberspace to gawk at.

From geeky-looking girls wearing huge-framed glasses, to tough guys looking too macho to bother, all have either imitated the video or recorded their reactions to the ditty.

So has Malaysian model-actress-entrepreneur Amber Chia, who sportingly dances to the tune with a little boy by her side and Malaysian comedian Rahim Mat Ali of the group Sepahtu.

According to a BBC report, the original video of the Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen also known as the PPAP song, amassed 4 million views, a response that paled in comparison to the 44 million views it garnered when it was uploaded to entertainment portal 9GAG’s Facebook video shortly after.

But reactions have been mixed.

One Facebook user Carlos Andrés Silva on hearing the ditty said: “I’m ruined – I will never get this song out of my head” while one Nelson Rivera Adrian Paige said: “I am both highly amused as well as extremely confused.”

BBC however did highlight Facebook user Hiro Kenshida making a plea to stop sharing the song as it was too annoying for words. “Please stop sharing this annoying song, it’s exploded on my feed and is driving me up the wall because it’s so irritating to listen to,” he said.

Now it’s up to you to watch and judge for yourself.

WARNING! The tune may be playing in your head all day long!
