That’s no way for a menteri besar to act, says DAP man
CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The DAP’s former candidate for the Cameron Highlands parliamentary seat, M Manogaran, has urged Putrajaya to come up with a Housing Development Board to solve the housing woes of the bottom 40%.
Speaking to FMT, Manogaran said this would especially benefit those who had been waiting for homes for a long time.
If such a board existed, he said, incidents such as that which happened in Cameron Highlands recently, were unlikely to happen.
He said this following a report, and a video, about Cameron Highlands PSM secretary B Suresh and several residents being dismissed by Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob when they went to see him to plead for a solution for their housing woes.
Adnan, however, later agreed to meet them on condition that Suresh not be present.
Manogaran said that was no way to treat people who came to meet political leaders with their problems.
He said this was an example of how the Barisan Nasional government in Pahang had failed to provide basic necessities such as housing and land to the people. And when they approached the leaders for help, they were dismissed, he added.
“What Suresh did was the right thing. He brought a group of people to see the MB to resolve long standing housing woes and this must have been after numerous calls, memos and protests which were not attended to.
“There is no reason for the MB to treat those people they way he did, and no excuse for him to say that if they could wait for 40 years, they can wait for another 10 years.”
This remark of Adnan was heard in the video.
“What the government does not understand is that the people are not asking for privileges but basic necessities such as housing and land.
“Isn’t a 40-year wait long enough? Why wait for another 10 years? It should be done in 10 weeks as this issue is not new and the application files have been sitting on the relevant authority’s desk for umpteen years,” Manogaran added.
He asked whether those who had been “deprived” of homes for so long would be compensated.
“Who is to compensate these people for all the years of waiting? The government should not only give them proper houses but also some form of compensation for making them wait for 40 years to make up for the ‘lost years’.”
Continuing to berate Adnan, Manogaran said: “With this kind of behaviour from an MB, as seen in the video, it is no surprise that other BN politicians have similarly got little or scant regard for the people.” -FMT
