Baby Girl Dies After Mom Forgets Her Inside Hot Car for 4 Hours in Malaysia

A 2-year-old girl from Malaysia died after her mother left her inside a car for four hours on March 14.

The girl, identified as Nur Awfa Humaisha Muhammad Ali Riduan, was found unconscious after her 32-year-old mother, Hasmah Masroh, a college lecturer, realized she left her inside her Proton Saga car that was parked at the Port Dickson Vocational College at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, according to Channel News Asia.

“She only realised that her child was still in the car at around 1pm. When she rushed to the vehicle, the victim was already unconscious,” Port Dickson OCPD Supt Zainduin Ahmad said, The Star reported.

After seeing her unconscious daughter, the mother immediately rushed her to the Port Dickson health clinic, where she was pronounced dead shortly after.

One of Hasmah’s friends said the mother would usually drop off her eldest child to school before sending Awfa to a babysitter in Kampung Paya, then go to work at the college.

“She may have been stressed with work. They also had a visit from the Examinations Board yesterday, which may have been on her mind,” her friend added.

Muhammad Ali Riduan, the child’s father, was notified of the incident at 1:30 p.m.

It was initially believed that the toddler succumbed to heatstroke, but Supt Zainduin said a post mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of death of the child.

The officer said that authorities are now investigating the case under Section 31 of the Child Act 2001 for child abuse in Malaysia. The section of the act states:

“Any person who, being a person having the care of a child commits an offense and shall on corwiction be liable to a fine not exceeding 20,000 Malaysian ringgit ($5,109) or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years or to both.”

No official arrests or charges have been made.
