Guan Eng supports axing of top MACC leaders

PH victory shows rakyat's judgment on politically-motivated cases against opposition leaders, says DAP leader.

Lim Guan Eng said he will refrain from talking about his case in public and ‘needs to go through the whole process’ like anyone else.

GEORGE TOWN: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said an urgent reform was needed within the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) to ensure confidence is restored in the country’s anti-graft body.

He said he supported Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s call to replace the MACC top leadership as the first step.

Lim said this when asked to comment whether his pending corruption trial at the High Court would have any bearing on his future undertakings.

He added that he will refrain from talking about his case in public and “needs to go through the whole process” like anyone else.

“It is in court. I cannot comment as it is sub judice. The victory of Pakatan Harapan is the judgment of the people on the truth.

“This puts to question the veracity and reliability of cases against leaders like me and others as well,” he said at Komtar today.

Lim’s corruption trial was delayed for a month by High Court Justice Hadhariah Syed Ismail on April 9 to allow him to take part in the general election process.

Hadhariah fixed May 10 for case management and the trial will continue on May 21.

On June 30, 2016, Lim, 58, was charged with using his public office to obtain gratification for himself and his wife, Betty Chew, by approving an application by Magnificent Emblem Sdn Bhd (MESB) to convert agricultural land for residential purposes.

Lim was also alleged to have used his position to obtain gratification by purchasing a bungalow from Phang for RM2.8 million, which is below the property’s market value of RM4.27 million, on Oct 21, 2015.

Phang was charged with abetment.

Both Lim and Phang had pleaded not guilty to the charges. A total of 25 witnesses had taken the stand for the prosecution.

The prosecution, led by deputy public prosecutor Masri Mohd Daud, is expected to call 55 witnesses.
