Republican Senate Candidate Uses the Word ‘Negro’ Defending His ‘China People’ Campaign

Considering the number of embarrassing politicians already running for office in the United States, to be dubbed as the “worst candidate in America” is indeed quite a feat.

But Don Blankenship, who is one of the three viable Republican candidates running for the Senate nomination in West Virginia, is by no means an ordinary man, and the title CNN gave him may actually even be an understatement.

For one, 68-year-old “Trump-like” candidate is a convicted criminal who served time in prison for violating “mine safety and health standards” connected to a 2010 disaster that killed 29 miners.

Despite being married to a Chinese immigrant, the former CEO of Massey Energy has exhibited his racist tendencies early on.

He recently made headlines for releasing a racially tone-deaf campaign ad highlighting the Taiwanese heritage of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s wife Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and accusing McConnell of being in the pocket of the “China people.”

“Swamp captain Mitch McConnell has created millions of jobs for China people,” Blankenship was quoted as saying in the controversial ad released last week. “While doing so, Mitch has gotten rich. In fact, his China family has given him tens of millions of dollars.”

“Mitch’s swamp people are now running false, negative ads against me. They are also childishly calling me despicable and mentally ill. The war to drain the swamp and create jobs for West Virginia people has begun. I will beat Joe Manchin and ditch Cocaine Mitch for the sake of the kids.”

His campaign further accuses McConnell’s father-in-law of owning “a large Chinese shipping company has given Mitch and his wife millions of dollars over the years. The company was implicated recently in smuggling cocaine from Colombia to Europe, hidden aboard a company ship carrying foreign coal was $7 million dollars of cocaine.”

He also called Chao’s father a “wealthy Chinaperson” in his tirade against people with family from China last month. He would later justify using the term by saying that he referred to himself as a “West Virginia person.”

After drawing widespread condemnation, Blankenship then told a reporter that “races are Negro, white Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian. There’s no mention of race. I’ve never used a race word.”

His questionable conduct also got his own party alarmed, with many Republicans expressing worry that should Blankenship win the West Virginia primary on Tuesday, he would have a difficult chance of winning against Democratic Senator Joe Manchin in November.

Blankenship, however, has stated that if another candidate wins the Republican nomination, he is ready for a third party bid in the West Virginia senate race.

“I have not ruled out anything,” Blankenship told CBS, adding, “I’ve said that I cannot let him [Attorney General Patrick Morrisey] win because of the opioid connection and planned parenthood connection.”
