Cops: Deadly prison fight was gang-related
PETALING JAYA: The Sungai Buloh prison brawl that resulted in the death of an inmate was gang-related, said police.
Sungai Buloh OCPD Supt Mohd Rozi Jidin (pic) said the fight, which broke out at around 12.30pm on Saturday, was between members of two gangs who had managed to get their hands on sharp weapons.
"We are investigating how they managed to get the weapons," he said on Sunday.
The dead inmate, in his 20s, had been involved in a kidnapping case.
“Two inmates stabbed him in the back with a sharp weapon during the fight.
"We are still waiting for the post-mortem results," he said.
There was an unconfirmed report from the dead man's lawyer, Gerard Lazarus, that several inmates had died in the brawl.
Supt Mohd Rozi however denied it, saying there was only one fatality.
"Only one death and no other injuries," he said.
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohd Adnan Abdullah also refuted the report that there were several deaths from the prison brawl.
"As far as I know, only one person died," he said.
