BETONG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak paid tribute today (April 17) to Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, who will no longer be involved in politics after the next state election.
It was during the launch of the Rural Transformation Centre (RTC), Layar Junction (Simpang Layar) here that the Prime Minister commented that the Barisan Nasional (BN) will certainly miss a senior politician like Jabu, who he described as an old friend.
“He (Jabu) has been very loyal to BN. His loyalty to BN is second to none and has proven that he fought with his  heart and soul for BN throughout the years,” Najib said.
He hoped that Sarawakians would continue to remember Jabu as a politician who is dedicated in his work and has given so much for the state and country as well.
“Me and him go a long way back. I wish him all the best in his retirement and may his legacy be long lasting among Sarawakians for many years to come,” he said.
During the same event, Najib revealed that the selection of Jabu’s son Gerald Rentap to contest for the Layar seat as a BN candidate in the coming state election is a sign of gratitude for Jabu’s contribution to BN throughout the years.
“Rentap can do magnificent work for Layar if given the chance. He is our pick for this area as we want to say thank you to his father for his contributions too,” he commented.
Meanwhile, Jabu, who was also present during the event, commented that Betong has always been a BN stronghold and he is proud of the fact.
First winning in a state election in 1974, Jabu finally called it quits after 43 years in politics this year.
Also present at the event were Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, other federal ministers, state ministers, MPs and other BN candidates.
