Ku Nan dismisses million-plus signatures to oust Najib
KUALA LUMPUR: The over one million signatures collected by the Save Malaysia Movement to call for the ousting of Prime Minister Najib Razak does not pose any problem to the government, an Umno leader said.
Party secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor claimed that the majority of signatures gathered by the movement were from college and university students.
“In the search for more signatures, he (former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad) went to all colleges. These events were all held in colleges.
“We know where he went. In fact we are monitoring private and public universities,” Tengku Adnan, commonly known as Ku Nan, told reporters at Dewan Rakyat today.
He said young people were more “vulnerable” to such a movement, as the level of engagement between the government and youths were inadaquate.
“These children, we have not engaged with them quite well and that is why he is getting all these signatures.”
He opined that the 1.27 million signatures would not have a significant impact on Barisan Nasional.
“We have 30 million people, with adults making up around 12 million. Out of that, they only got 10 per cent. I don’t think there is any problem for us there,” said the Federal Territories Minister, adding that out of the 10 per cent, there could also be those who didn’t know what they were signing.
Mahathir, when recently announcing the number of signatures gathered, had said that he would personally seek an audience with the King to submit the call for Najib to step down.
