Zam: PAS can win by-elections if one to one fight with UMNO

KUALA LUMPUR: PAS victories in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar will boost the morale of the people in general and encourage them to continue to support the Opposition in the 14th General Election in 2018, said a former Information Minister in his latest blog posting. “If it’s a one to one fight with Umno, PAS is likely to win given the fact that the sentiments of the people are against the ruling party.”

“The two by-elections, in the wake of a helicopter tragedy in Sarawak, is the will of Allah, an opportunity for the people to help save the nation.”

On the other hand, ventured Zainuddin Maidin , if Umno wins both by-elections, “Najib will continue to remain Prime Minister for another 1,000 years”.

“If Umno loses, he can’t hang around even a second longer if the ruling party is to have any future.”

PAS’ victories in the two by-elections, added Zainuddin, will pave the way for the Islamists to forge co-operation with the informal national opposition alliance despite the former being seen as trying to be on good terms with Umno. “The reality is that PAS supporters at the grassroots level cannot accept Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife, Rosmah.”

Zainuddin, also a former Editor in Chief of Utusan Malaysia, warned that if Amanah entered the fray and lost, there would be a devastating effect on the morale of the Opposition parties, especially PKR. “Amanah itself would be seen as having come to the lowest level by trying to measure its strength against PAS.”

The journalist turned blogger cautioned the informal national political alliance, Pakatan Harapan, against harbouring feelings of revenge against PAS and being motivated by prejudice and false hopes. “They must not think of denying PAS a chance to challenge Barisan National (BN) in the two by-elections.”

“Negative sentiments have no place.”

Zainuddin urged the Opposition parties to be realistic. “Pakatan must accept the fact that PAS has long worked in the two parliamentary seats at stake and has a large number of supporters at the grassroots level compared with Amanah.”

“Amanah is a breakaway from PAS and still searching for support. We are not sure to what extent it can compare with PAS. Pakatan must not think that PAS supporters will ditch the party for Amanah.”
