After invite to lead, Jeffrey now open to merging with new opposition alliance Saksama
KOTA KINABALU, July 20 — Sabah opposition party leader Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan has welcomed a possible cooperation with Gabungan Rakyat Saksama, after being tapped to chair the proposed new coalition.
The Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) president, who previously disassociated himself from the group, said he was flattered by the invite from Saksama recently and was always open to working with other like-minded groups.
“I am honoured to be given their respect on leading the struggle and I am happy. Hopefully, it is genuine with no hidden agenda...
“I am open to the idea of a merger between us provided it’s agreed on by both parties,” he said when contacted by Malay Mail Online.
Two days ago, Saksama secretary-general Jack Giau said that they would defer to Jeffrey to lead the party in their struggle for Borneo rights, due to his extensive experience on the issue.
Jeffrey, who announced his rebranded party last week, said then that he would continue to be aligned with the United Sabah Alliance (USA) along with Parti Cinta Sabah and Sabah Progressive Party, and was not linked to Saksama .
“But Sabahans and Sabahan leaders need to wake up and realise that only through unity and solidarity in mind and in actions, can we succeed in our mission to restore our inherent rights, autonomy, freedom and dignity.
“I am with USA… but we are always open to cooperation with other groups and parties with similar aims and objectives...I hope one day all local parties can unite in solidarity to become one united party or coalition using one symbol to contest against the BN,” he said adding that Star had a provision in its constitution to allow component parties.
Giau said the coalition wanted someone of Jeffrey’s experience and calibre to lead the coalition, and would defer to him. They would also welcome USA into the fold.
“We want to bring on as many parties as possible together to forge unity among opposition supporters,” he said.
Saksama, which said it will formalise the pact on August 1, was earlier reported to comprise of Sarawak Reform Party (Reform), Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru (PBDS Baru), Parti Sejahtera Angkatan Perpaduan Sabah (SAPU), Pertubuhan Perpaduan Rakyat Kebangsaan Sabah (Perpaduan), Sabah-based Malaysia United People's Party (MUPP), Parti Kebangsaan Sabah (PKS), and the People’s Alternative Party (PAP) from the peninsula.
The pact says it subscribes to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 that places Sarawak, Sabah and the peninsula as equal partners in the formation of Malaysia.
