MP: U-turn on TTDI parking fees shows it was rushed
PETALING JAYA: The abrupt U-turn on the decision to increase parking fees in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) shows the policy by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) was rushed, says Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng today.
In a statement, Lim said it also showed the decision to hike parking fees in selected areas of the city was made without consultation with traffic experts.
He further slammed the drastic move, saying it was inexcusable that neither Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, Kuala Lumpur mayor Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz, nor their officers had taken note of the fact that TTDI was a residential area, prior to imposing the fee hike.
“How could they have not known? Have they been ‘working abroad’ so often that they forgot what their own capital city looks like?” he asked.
Earlier today, it was reported that TTDI would be excluded from the list of areas to experience an almost 150% hike in parking fees. Mohd Amin said the decision was made following a meeting between Tengku Adnan and DBKL this morning.
Lim reiterated his call for a moratorium on the increase of parking fees until DBKL conducted a town hall meeting first with the relevant parties to explain its plan.
“It is unfair to punish the pockets of drivers, and it is an ineffective way to reduce traffic congestion in the city. The authorities must conduct a thorough study and have a town hall meeting before any drastic decision is made.”
Yesterday, Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar called for DBKL to halt the increase in parking fees until proper discussions were carried out on the matter.
