Najib rips 'fantasy economics' of alternative budget

In a thinly veiled attack against the federal opposition, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said there are those who have produced an alternative budget with “gaping holes” that would make Malaysia unsafe, unsecure, and unstable.
While highlighting the government’s track record, he warned there are “others” who make promises to Malaysians but who have no track record of their own, and are only interested in their political ambitions.
“There are others who would make all sorts of promises to you. But firstly, they have no track record.
“They just oppose, even when they secretly agree with a proposal – because they are not concerned about the welfare of the Malaysian people. No. They are only concerned with their own selfish political ambitions.
“Secondly, unfortunately they cannot add up. They produced a shadow budget with gaping holes in it. Their fantasy economics would make Malaysia unsafe, unsecure and unstable.
“This government on the other hand, has a proven track record. A record of achievement,” he said in his speech officiating the Kuala Lumpur International Youth Discourse in Putra World Trade Centre today.
Najib pointed out that Malaysia’s achievements had been given accolades by international bodies such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Pakatan Harapan had unveiled its alternative budget proposal on Oct 25, just two days before Najib tabled his Budget 2018 proposal in parliament.
The alternative budget calls for, among others, the abolition of the GST and the reinstatement of the sales and services tax (SST).
To make up for the resulting RM25.5 billion shortfall, Harapan said the switch from GST to SST would spur business activities and consumer consumption, which would in turn increase federal revenue.
It said it would also cut RM20 billion in “wastage and corruption” by slashing the budget allocation for the Prime Minister Department.- Mkini
