'Pay of top GLCs officers must be made public'

Penang MTUC has lauded the move by the UK government to enforce the public disclosure of the wages earned by all employees from top to bottom for all companies in the country.
Penang MTUC said the British move, besides being transparent, would serve as a barometer for the working segment of society to judge the wage disparity that exists between the nominal top few and the vast majority of the working class population.
"In Malaysia, there has been exposure, in the post-BN era, of the wages of the topmost employees in GLCs that can be best described as unjustified or, in the alternative, undeserving and in the extreme, immoral," Penang MTUC state branch secretary Veeriah Krishnasamy told Malaysiakini.
"It is, therefore, our view that our (new) government, having committed to the principles of transparency and accountable governance, take the bold step to make it mandatory by law that the wages of all GLC employees from the top down be disclosed.”
He said the citizens of Malaysia are entitled to know the reality of the unwarranted wastage of the nation's economic resources in buttering those who have been gifted for nothing else but political leverage.
Since Pakatan Harapan seized Putrajaya at the May 9 polls, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has announced the lay off a total 17,000 political appointees to save public expenditure.
Mahathir had described the hiring of political appointees as a "wastage" the government had to deal with.
It has also been revealed that Sime Darby's non-executive director Musa Hitam was paid RM822,000 in 2012, while the salary of its managing director Bakke Salleh was RM5.24 million.
The company, meanwhile, has not adopted a minimum wage policy for its workers.
It was also reported today that “advisers" in former premier Najib Abdul Razak administration were paid between RM70,000 and RM200,000 a month.
The report cited a case where "a former minister turned adviser to the Prime Minister's Office was paid RM200,000 a month – about 10 times the salary of the prime minister."
According to the report, these well-paid officials have since been asked to retire.-Mkini
