Ex-servicemen want purge of corrupt officials, including in police force

Patriot backs move by the new government to exorcise 'the ghosts of corruption'.
Patriot president Mohamed Arshad Raji says the image of the police force has been marred by ‘a minority of personnel’.
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Patriots Association (Patriot) today called for a purge of all officials known to have been involved in corruption, irrespective of their position and status, in all departments including the police force.
Patriot, which is made up of former police and military officers, said corrupt police officers were an obstacle to reform and should be removed.
“With clean and principled leaders in the police force, slowly and surely respect will be redeemed,” Patriot president Brig-Gen (Rtd) Mohamed Arshad Raji said in a statement.
Arshad was commenting on a news report yesterday that several senior police officers, including Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohd Fuzi Harun, were expected to be removed and that three special task forces set up during the tenure of former IGP Khalid Abu Bakar would be disbanded.
“Prior to the news of the purge, criticism towards some of the senior officers in the police force and alleged corruption had gone viral.
“As much as Patriot would like to see the image of the police force as a whole held in high esteem and respected by the public, it is undeniable that their image is far from being impressive because of a minority of personnel,” Arshad said.
He said Fuzi’s statement on March 7 that businessman Low Taek Jho had no connection to 1MDB only made things worse and “probably led him to his plight today”.
He added that what was happening should serve as a reminder to those in high places to do their duty and upkeep the trust of the people.
Arshad said several cases of deaths in police custody remained unresolved. He added that graft allegations about the police and an individual named Gopi were also unresolved despite even Khalid’s family members reportedly knowing who Gopi was.
“Patriot takes the stand that the only way to reform a corrupt organisation is to purge all those who are known to have been involved in corruption, irrespective of their position and status.”
Arshad also backed former auditor-general Ambrin Buang and his special committee on governance, procurement and finance commitment to probe the corruption cases plaguing the country.
“The ghost of the decadence and corruptible acts rotting to the core, a shameful legacy of past administration, must be fully exorcised.” -FMT
