Hindraf says Regina being oppressed by the state

KUALA LUMPUR: Hindraf Makkal Sakthi today criticised the Veterinary Services Department for taking over a livestock breeder’s land in Kerling, Selangor, and dividing the land for others to start chicken breeding.

Hindraf Chairman P. Waythamoorthy said bulldozers and containers had taken over the premises of Regina Mary to flatten the land before handing it over to others eyeing the property.

“We find this totally unfair when a proven breeder of over 14 years like Regina was evicted without just cause or excuse and the premises are being handed to new tenants.

“Her lease only expires in 2018. It has been unlawfully terminated.”

The human rights NGO, which works with displaced estate workers and the stateless, had earlier, on April 18, said the police, Veterinary Services Department and the state Land Office had “trespassed” into Regina’s land and destroyed the premises and livestock.

The Hindraf chief failed to see any reasoning behind the Selangor Government apparatus forcefully destroying the livestock and the structure on the premises leased to her.

“Although the matter is still pending, there’s a sudden rush by the Selangor Government to divide Regina’s land among what can only be considered as ‘thieves’.”

Waythamoorthy, a senior lawyer in private practice, and not so long ago, a Senator and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, charged that the police, the Land Office and the Veterinary Department appeared to be acting with impunity against the helpless Regina.

“She’s clearly being oppressed by the state.

“This is an act of bullying, harassment and discrimination against a law-abiding citizen on behalf of what can only be considered as land thieves.”

Waythamoorthy again requested Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali to intervene and call for a meeting with Regina to address her grievances.

“The discriminatory action by the government agencies must also be dealt with immediately.

“The attitude of the Selangor Government and its apparatus in Regina’s case is appalling. She had been working on her lease land for so many years, breeding ruminant and non-ruminant livestock.”

He said Regina had made a police report when people encroached into her land about two weeks ago and threatened to destroy her livestock.

“It’s not known what the police have done so far on the report.”

Hindraf had written several times to Azmin on Regina’s plight. The first letter was on Nov 16 last year and Azmin’s office responded on Nov 30 that he was waiting for a report from the Veterinary Services Department before he could arrange a meeting with Regina and other parties
.
This was followed by letters to the MB’s office on April 5 and 7 this year.
