Mustapa settles suit over Harakah article

KUALA LUMPUR: International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed has settled a lawsuit against former PAS Vice-President Husam Musa.

In a statement read before Justice Nor Bee Ariffin, Husam expressed regret towards Mustapa over the news report. “I have never said those words that were reported in the Harakah Daily’s article entitled, ‘Lahad Datu Menteri sepatutnya letak jawatan’.”

“I have never accused him (Mustapa) in the statement.”

“I was quoted in the article as the person who accused him. I express my regret that the publication had twisted my words and brought much inconvenience to us,” he said.

After Husam read the statement, Mustapa’s lawyer Shafee Abdullah said his client was satisfied and withdrew the lawsuit against Husam.

In December last year, Mustapa settled the same lawsuit against PAS’ former Secretary-General Mustafa Ali, Harakah and its’ editors.

Mustapa filed the suit in April 2013 against Husam, Mustafa and editors Zulkifli Sulong and Azmi Yusof.

The minister alleged that Husam had defamed him in a political speech in Kelantan. The speech was published in the PAS paper.

He further alleged that the words used by Husam implied the minister had abused his power for personal gain.

He sought damages for libel, conspiracy and malicious falsehood as well as an injunction against the defendants.
