KUCHING: PKR Sarawak will be asserting their autonomy against the decision made by the presidential council regarding seat allocations for the May 7 state election.

According to PKR state chairman Baru Bian, even though negotiations at the presidential council have yet to be finalised, there are signs that the negotiations had been steered in a direction that was against the mandate of the state leadership council (MPN).

“Unfortunately, what has been communicated to us at this stage pertaining to the allocation of seats in not in line with what had been decided at state level,” Baru told a press conference at the PKR headquarters earlier today (April 15).

He also said PKR Sarawak have indicated their concerns to their national leaders of being unable to accept the decisions made at the national level regarding seat allocations.

He added that PKR Sarawak will be flexing their veto powers and would select 40 potential candidates to fill up seats based on their Key Performance Index (KPI) results.

“Our decision will be based purely on the winnability of our candidates and not for any other reason,” Baru said, adding that the list of candidates will be announced by PKR Sarawak in the next few days.

He also believes that their decision will be accepted by the Presidential Council as it would also act as a positive indicator of their stand vis-a-vis the autonomy of Sarawak within the Malaysian Federation.

Meanwhile, he said that it is regrettable that certain parties have seen fit to jeopardise the opposition coalition’s potential to increase their seats in the state election during the negotiation period.

“For this reason, MPN Sarawak firmly believes that we must resume control of our destiny in the 11th Sarawak elections. We are the people of Sarawak and we must do what is best for Sarawak,” said Baru, who also assured that he will defend his seat in Ba Kelalan.
