KUCHING: A group of volunteers came to the aid of an elderly man who had been living in a squalid and dilapidated wooden house at Kampung Matang Lot 10, Jalan Matang here recently.

Pak Yakup, 86, from Belawai had been living alone in the house for the past 11 years. He is also paralysed from the waist down and needed help from his neighbour to move around. The volunteers were from Sukarelawan Belia Petra Jaya, Yayasan Kemajuan Insan Sarawak (Yakin), the Social Welfare Department, Baitulmal and Cats FM.

They cleaned the tiny house, removed and replaced his soiled mattress, painted the house, fixed the wooden floor and cleared bushes surrounding the house.

The Community Development Unit of JKM will make another visit to Yakup to ascertain the type of assistance needed due to his present physical condition.

Members of the public are also encouraged to contact JKM regarding cases of neglected people and those requiring welfare assistance.
