Adenan finally speaks of grandson killed in accident

KUCHING: It has been over a week since Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem’s grandson Azreal Mahmud died… and the grief-stricken grandfather has finally opened up.

“I always thought that I would be the one to go first, thus mere words cannot express the grief when we had to say goodbye to our young ones, taken away before their prime,” he said in a Facebook post.

“It has been a week since your passing and I will continue to pray,” he added in the post last night, under a black-and-white photograph of Azreal.

Azreal, 22, died near his home at Santubong, about 30km from here, following a crash between a car and a motorcycle about 3.30am on May 29. The car had slammed into a tree and burst into flames, according to a Star report.

The post was linked to Adenan’s daughter, Yatie A Bedos. Yatie’s profile photo was of her and Azreal, who was one of three boys and a girl.

Thousands of condolences have poured onto Adenan’s Facebook page since his post last night.

The Star report said Adenan, 72, had spoken many times publicly about his own brush with death due to heart disease before becoming the Chief Minister two years ago.

The report said although awareness of the tragedy had spread after the accident – which was reported in local Chinese dailies but without naming the victim – Adenan’s post last night was the first official comment from the family.

Other family members have also begun posting photographs and their own mourning messages.

Over Gawai Dayak, which began on June 1, the report said, some had wondered why Adenan had not made any visits to open houses, which is the customary practise for those in high office during major festive seasons.
