Malaysian author Zen Cho makes prestigious British fantasy awards shortlist
LONDON, June 8 — Malaysian-born author Zen Cho has landed on the shortlist for both the best newcomer and the best fantasy novel categories at the British fantasy awards, The Guardian reported yesterday.
Cho, who is now based in England, is one of six contenders for the best fantasy novel prize.
According to the bio on her official site, debut novel Sorcerer to the Crown is the first in a historical fantasy trilogy.
It is set in Regency-era London and follows Zacharias Wythe, England’s first African Sorcerer Royal, as he tries to discover why England’s magical stocks are drying up.
Other novels on the shortlist include Naomi Novik’s Uprooted, Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s Signal to Noise, Jen Williams’s The Iron Ghost, Joe Abercrombie’s Half a War and Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Guns of the Dawn.
The winners will be decided by members of the British Fantasy Society as well as a panel of judges, with the decision announced on September 25, 2016 at FantasyCon 2016 in Scarborough, The Guardian said.
Past winners have included some of the biggest names in the genre, including Michael Moorcock, Tanith Lee, Ramsey Campbell and Gene Wolfe.
Cho is the author of Crawford Award-winning short story collection Spirits Abroad, and editor of anthology Cyberpunk: Malaysia, both published by Buku Fixi.
She has been nominated for the Campbell Award for Best New Writer and honour-listed for the Carl Brandon Society Awards for her short fiction.
