Malaysian hostages freed by Abu Sayyaf
PETALING JAYA: The four Sarawakians taken hostage by Abu Sayyaf militants in April this year, have been released.
The Star Online, citing reports from Jolo, said the release came after Malaysian and Filipino negotiators spoke to the captors after several rounds of negotiations.
Sabah Police Commissioner Abdul Rashid Harun, when contacted by the portal, declined to comment on the matter.
The administrator of the “Bring our Malaysian hostages home” Facebook page, when contacted by FMT, confirmed the release and said more information would be posted later.
The four – brothers Wong Teck Kang, 31, and Wong Teck Chii, 29, their cousin, Johnny Lau Jung Hien, 21, and Wong Hung Sing, 24, were abducted while they were on a tugboat enroute to Sarawak from the Philippines.
Their captors had reportedly demanded RM18 million to secure their release.
