Quit threat by PAS candidate over Umno collaboration
PETALING JAYA: PAS candidate for Sungai Besar Dr Rani Osman says he would be the “first to quit” his party if it joins forces with Umno to form a unity government.
The Sungai Panjang assemblyman said this in vehemently denying the notion of the Islamist party collaborating with Umno, reported Malay Mail Online today.
“If there is collaboration with Umno, I’ll be the first one to leave PAS. There is no such thing!” he was quoted saying.
In saying so, Rani also defended being “friendly” with Umno, saying Islam teaches its adherents to get along with each other, regardless of political leanings.
“In politics, your best friend can be your enemy. Islam has taught us that. Be good to everyone, even your enemy,” he said, adding that he was “close friends” with Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Sungai Besar Budiman Mohd Zohdi.
He then lambasted Amanah for throwing their hat into the ring, thus spoiling PAS’ chances of taking on BN in a direct fight that could help the Islamist party to emerge winners.
Rani’s statement is an echo of what PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Ibrahim said in a statement yesterday.
Tuan Ibrahim said PAS had always been against Umno, and that this was evident in the Islamist party contesting against the ruling party in all elections.
“PAS welcomes the Government’s move to provide a chance to the party president to present the Private Member’s Bill (on hudud) in Parliament.
“However, we are against the Government in issues such as the TPPA, GST and 1MDB,” he had said.
