Berjaya Corp launches gaming operations in Vietnam

KUCHING: Berjaya Corporation Bhd (Berjaya Corp) through its unit in Vietnam Berjaya Gia Thinh Investment Technology Joint Stock Company (Berjaya GTI) has launched its gaming operations in Vietnam yesterday.

The company in a statement issued from Vietnam said Berjaya GTI, a Vietnamese company which is 51 per cent owned by Berjaya Lottery Vietnam Ltd (BLV), a company incorporated in Labuan has officially launched its lottery operation at the Independence Palace in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

With the official launching, the company has also introduced its first game, Mega 6/45 Lotto Jackpot Game there.

Berjaya Corp’s chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Seri Robin Tan said, “As a major player in the computerised lottery industry in Malaysia, we are delighted to be the exclusive partner of Vietlott to implement the first ever nationwide self-selected computerized lottery project in Vietnam.

“This project also holds great significance for us, as it has strengthened the social and economic ties between our two countries,” said Tan who was also present at the launching event.

“In line with Vietlott’s objectives, we hope that Mega 6/45 will bring more benefits and a better lottery experience to consumers, as well as generating significant revenues for the Vietnamese Government to improve the wellbeing of its people through healthcare, education and social welfare programs.

“The reliability and integrity of a computerised lottery system will also assist the government in combating illegal lottery gaming operations.”

Berjaya Corp hopes the Mega 6/45 Lotto Jackpot Game with a minimum 12 billion dong jackpot will excite a new generation of Vietnamese lottery players as well as create a more convenient lottery solution for existing players.

The company revealed that within the first month of operations, 800 sale terminals for Mega 6/45 tickets will be available throughout Ho Chi Minh City with some 10,000 point-of-sale terminals planned nationwide within the next five years.

Meanwhile, Berjaya Corp recalled that on Jan 20, 2016, the company together with its subsidiary company Berjaya Sports Toto Bhd (Sports Toto) had announced that the Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment had issued the Investment Registration Certificate to Berjaya Corp and Vietlott to certify an exclusive 18-year contract awarded to invest in and operate a nationwide computerised lottery in Vietnam.

The project which will cost approximately US$210.58 million over 18 years is carried out by Berjaya GTI.

Berjaya GTI, a Vietnamese company is 51 per cent owned by BLV. BLV is 80 per cent owned by Berjaya Corp and 20 per cent owned by Sports Toto.

Moreover, Vietlott is a 100 per cent state-owned enterprise under the Vietnamese Ministry of Finance and is the only enterprise permitted under Vietnamese law to conduct computerised lottery business in the entire territory of Vietnam.

Berjaya Group disclosed that its investments in Vietnam began in 2005 when the group officially became the first Malaysian corporation licensed to invest and develop real estate in Vietnam.

The group’s portfolio extends beyond the realm of real estate, and includes investments in luxury hotels namely the Sheraton Hanoi Hotel, InterContinental Hanoi Westlake and Long Beach Resort Phu Quoc. Berjaya also holds a significant stake in a stock broking company, namely SaigonBank Berjaya Securities Joint Stock Company in Ho Chi Minh City.
