Consumer group slams DBKL’s lame excuse for parking fee increase
PETALING JAYA: Pertubuhan Aduan Rakyat Malaysia (PAR) President A. Chandrakumanan has rubbished Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) reason for increasing the parking fees in certain areas by 150 per cent.
In a statement released today, Chandrakumanan said although DBKL may be moving in the right direction, saying that the parking fees needed to be increased just because they haven’t done so for almost 30 years is not the people’s problem.
“The people should not be penalised by having to bear the steep increase in parking fees just because DBKL had not hiked the fees for almost 30 years,” he said.
He added that the sudden increase was also being used by the opposition to undermine the government and its administration over the “weaknesses” in DBKL’s management.
“If DBKL had increased the parking fees gradually over the last 30 years there wouldn’t be any complaints now.”
He pointed out that DBKL should have ensured that its integrated transport system was in place before putting people off from driving into the city.
“If we have an excellent public transportation system in place, then it would be fair to increase the parking fees in the city centre.
“As it is, increasing the parking fees is not a solution to overcome congestion and the existing parking problems, especially in the Central Business District.
“DBKL should have held back their decision to increase the parking fees until the completion of the MRT.”
