Bersih 5 to go on, says report
PETALING JAYA: The Bersih 5 rally will go on, likely in October, reported Malay Mail Online today.
The report said this is believed to be the “important announcement” that Bersih 2.0 – the organising committee, is set to make in a press conference this afternoon.
“No tentative date. Plan is to have it in October, with a series of rallies every two weeks at least leading up to it,” a source from Bersih 2.0 told the portal, adding that the rallies will take place at various locations.
The electoral reform group’s fifth street protest is being called to press for action on the 1MDB case, following the US Department of Justice’s (DoJ) lawsuits over the state investment firm.
Previous Bersih rallies, except for Bersih 4 held in August last year, had culminated in clashes between the police and the protesters.
Umno’s Jamal Yunos of the infamous Red Shirts movement has threatened to hold a counter rally, should Bersih 2.0 go on with their fifth rally.
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has said Bersih 5 can proceed, so long as the organisers abide by the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA), and do not demand the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Khalid also gave the green light for the counter Red Shirts rally, provided they followed PAA provisions.
